| The full diversity of Borneo’s highland forests cannot be maintained if they are reduced to a patchwork. Successful rainforest conservation requires the maintenance of very large blocks of inter-connected forests, without which hundreds, or even thousands, of species become extinct. |
| |
The ‘Heart of Borneo’ still holds huge tracks of continuous pristine forest, the only remaining place in South-east Asia where forests can still be conserved on a very large scale. It straddles the transboundary highlands of Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia and reaches out through the foothills into the adjacent lowlands. The future of this forest heritage depends on the collaboration of all three governments as no one country can manage these unique uplands.
WWF aims to assist Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia to conserve the ‘Heart of Borneo’ through a series of protected areas and sustainably-managed forest, and through international co-operation led by the Bornean governments and supported by a global effort. |
| |
Central to the success of the ‘Heart of Borneo’ will be the transboundary collaboration of governments, the engagement of local interests in short and long term planning, securing long term finance, and the cooperation of the private sector in positively contributing to sustainable resource management.
The ‘Heart of Borneo’ presents a unique opportunity to conserve pristine tropical rainforest on a huge scale almost-30% of the world’s. It is now or never. |
