the Forestry
Department, Ministry
of Industry and
Primary Resources,
Mr Mahmud Hj Yussof,
will leave for the
US today to attend
an international
visitor leadership
programme entitled
`Protected Area
Management Issues'.
The three-week
programme is
scheduled to begin
on June 16 and will
run until July 4.
The programme is
sponsored by the US
State Depaitiuent.
All the participants
in the programme are
nominated through
the US Embassy in
Brunei. Mr Mahmud Hj
Yussof will be
joining regional
participants from
Indonesia and
Malaysia.
Topics of discussion
are tailored to
address the current
issue revolving
around the Heart of
Borneo project.
Among the objectives
of the programme are
to learn about the
US park and
protected area
management systems
and programmes, to
exchange views with
US officials on the
challenges of
resource
conservation in
diverse ecosystems
and the role of
national and
international
conservation
associations.
US Embassy Charge
d'Affaires Justin
Freedman said that
the programme is
part of the US
government support
and commitment to
the Heart of Borneo
project.
He added that all
the participants
will have the chance
to see how the US
has learned to work
with neighbours and
indigenous groups to
find real world
solutions to
promoting
sustainable economic
development in
harmony with wise
stewardship of the
natural environment.
